Over the years, Sweatshop Movement and our instructors have had the pleasure of building and participating in a variety of interesting and successful programs across both the city and state. While these programs had a limited run-time, we still take sincere pride in our involvement in these. Check out some of the many things Sweatshop Movement has been up to over the years...

Muir Elementary Hip Hop Club

During the 2011-2012 School year, Sweatshop Movement was proud to offer an afterschool program for elementary schoolers in Madison! Thanks be to a grant written by the staff at John Muir Elementary on Madison’s west side, we started the “Muir Hip Hop Club” and offered hip hop dance instruction to children ages 5-10 afterschool on Mondays. If you are interested in learning more about this program, or have questions about how you can start a similar program at your own school, please email erika [at] sweatshopmovement [dot] com, or send us a message on our contact page.

PEOPLE Program

Sweatshop Director Erika Bozinovski is proud to be the LONGEST-RUNNING Fine Arts instructor in PEOPLE program history, teaching Hip Hop Dance for them for 8 years. If you are not familiar with the PEOPLE program, please do take the time to read up on it here, but long story short, it is a program helping underserved students make the transition from middle school to high school and from high school into college. They offer tutoring and mentoring programs to students of color across the State of Wisconsin, and invite students to participate in a summer collegiate experience during their summers in high school – and as a part of this program, they are encouraged to pursue a Fine Art. Hip hop dance has been accredited as a fine art by their program, and has become one of the most popular courses they offer. We spend 3 intense weeks developping skills, and choreographing and staging a showcase for 25+ dancers, which we present on their last day of Summer Program. It is one of our favorite programs all year! UW Division of Continuing Studies Hip Hop Dance Class

From 2008-2012, Sweatshop Movement instructor Erika Bozinovski taught UW-Madison's only, official non-credit dance class through the UW Division of Continuing Studies. Adult [& teen] students were able to learn Hip Hop Dance in a fun, no pressure atmosphere, with 10-11 week courses, and low costs in a beautiful space! If you are interested in seeing this popular class back on their semester line-up, be sure to let them know by visiting their webpage here.

Wisconsin Union Mini Courses - Hip Hop Dance and Jazz Dance Courses

One of the First Ever Hip Hop Dance classes to reach Madison, WI was taught by none other than sweatSHOP movement's very own Erika Bozinovski. The Wisconsin Union Mini Course offered a Hip Hop Dance Mini Course from 2000 until 2008, and Erika was responsible for curriculum and development after taking the class over from it's only other instructor early in her college years, after taking the course and becoming his apprentice. In the fall of 2001, Erika took over the 5-week Hip Hop Dance courses, giving adult and teens of Madison the opportunity to learn and have fun in a no pressure, light commintment, environment. Erika also taught their short-lived Jazz Dance Course for 3 sessions. While the Hip Hop Dance Course no longer runs, the Mini Course program still has lots to offer! Check them out here!
